Last Night I Witnessed a Miracle; Thank You Capitalism!

Last night I witnessed a miracle. I was sitting on my couch and a little electronic rectangular device laying next to me began to make noise and shake. What was this sorcery? It was my cell phone. An object used to transmit data and information from one area to another through invisible radio waves.

What was being transmitted? Well, millions of bits of information was sent from London England by my good friend Bill. He too has one of these magical devices. He wrote me a message by tapping on a screen with his fingers. After composing the message he had it zapped to my phone. It traveled thousands of miles in an instant. Much faster than he could ever walk, run, or fly the message to me. It said:

“Alright bruv, I got my new iPhone 4S now so I’m presuming this text is free :) , what have you been up to son?”

Imagine that, I was now conversing across the globe with a friend I have never even shared a room with! All of this made possible by capitalistic pursuit and market demand. Could you imagine what would happen if the government and state controlled all means of production — you know, a Socialist society? Do you really think without profit based incentive there would be a product half, or half of a half as good as this magical iPhone?

And forgetting that — we were talking for “free” (I recognize subscriber fees and the cost of electric to charge the phone but for argument’s sake it was free). That’s right, no need for SMS charges. The grand wizard named Steve Jobs has bestowed upon us a magical machine that made communication possible.

People all across the planet communicate like this everyday, with all different types of miracle boxes called cellular phones. All because of capitalism makes it possible. All because of a market demand by consumers and entrepreneurs’ ability to meet said demand for a profit. These are modern-day miracles. Not only that — because of capitalism, everyday this magic is cheaper and cheaper to own! Not because government gets involved but because entrepreneurs find cheaper means of production while increasing performance and availability. Need proof — look at the price of data storage over the years.

Lesson: if you feel capitalism is a problem then you are mistaken. Your gripe is with government and big business manipulating you. This is called Corporatism and it is dangerous to mix the two.

Capitalism drives innovation and without it we would all be standing in line for our government food rations like they did in Soviet Russia. We would not be sitting on our couches talking with friends across a vast ocean named the Atlantic, on a device not much bigger than a deck of playing cards.

Thank you Capitalism!

The Hobbit Trailer Dropped

The official trailer is now available on Apple [direct link].

Looks really good — just like Lord of the Rings it will win hundreds of awards. However the story isn’t and never was as good as the LOTR story. Still more excited for The Dark Knight Rises.

Path to No Where

Path exploded on the iOS market… around December 2010. It was originally a service to share private photos with 50 of your closest friends. Despite a great user interface it never really caught on. So Path added Facebook sharing which did generate some more noise but again it never caught on.

As of a few weeks ago Path redesigned itself as a life journal. It launched what I consider to be the most beautiful example of design and UX (user experience) to date. The app itself is simply put, gorgeous. So many little details make it fun to tinker with. However no matter how beautiful something may be the market for said functionality doesn’t seem to be there.

I started getting a punch of emails from path a few weeks ago, none of my friends were ever on it but suddenly like an explosion the friend requests started coming in! I thought to myself, wow, this is neat! Lets roll with it. I stayed up to date on my friend’s progress for about 48 hours — and then I forgot all about the beauty of the app and saw it as something I needed to “check”.

72 hours in it all was quiet on the Path app front. No more updates. Everyone had signed up and while there were still friends signing up (due to other friends signing up) no one was using it as Path. It was just another way to spam Twitter/Facebook. Despite the beauty of the app, I uninstalled.

So where is Path now? You have a beautiful app which is amazing but what then? The service of Path is on par with a journal services like Momento or Day One (beautiful journal apps). The problem as well is these items are used as an “on top of” platform. They exist on top of Twitter and Facebook and theoretically just duplicate and complicate already basic function. How?

If I want to post what I’m doing I can just do that with Facebook or Twitter. Launching another app to interact seems to be another step. No? It is sad because I want to use Path — I really do think it is gorgeous! I’m in awe of the app! But I just don’t need it. That is the great tragedy.

Outside tech pundits and gurus, the valley and blogging elite — I just don’t see it. It’s been a week or so now… no more friend requests because I deleted the app. I was reminded yesterday by a tweet from my brother. It said it all.

iOS 5.1 Beta 2 Brings Delete to Photo Stream

Great news for everyone who has ever taken naked or revealing photos with their iPhone. iOS 5.1 beta 2 will now allow you to delete photos from your Photo Stream. Not exactly sure how this product shipped without something as basic as a delete function but alas it will be repaired soon enough.

Secret Internet Fatties everywhere breathe a sigh of relief. All those odd angle nudes will now be wiped away. A clean slate to start fresh, haha!

Apple v. Samsung in Images

This is such a great post by M.G. Seigler! Behold, something we all know anyway. He writes:

Good (iPhone 3GS) — Better (iPhone 4) — Best (iPhone 4S).

Vs.

You should get this one, it has a nicer screen than this one. But wait, it’s slower. Maybe get this other one. But this one has a keyboard. But I hate keyboards. So get this one, it runs Windows Phone. But maybe I should go Android. Oh, so get this one. Well, but I sort of like the clamshell. Then this is the one you want. But I hate the color. Okay, then this one. Well, I also kind of like this one, but it’s running an older version of Android. So then this is the one you want. The screen is too damn big. Okay, just close your eyes and pick one goddamnit.

Choice sounds great until you have to choose.

RIP

We bow our heads in memory and in celebration of the greatest creative mind of the century. A true visionary. 

Apple Predictions For Tomorrow

Did this last time and got something like 5 out of 6 correct. Figured I would keep with what is now tradition and post my predictions for tomorrow’s Apple iPhone event.

Here goes, sort of a given:

  • iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 will be announced.

In terms of the 4s:

  • 4S will be a lower cost iPhone 4 redesign.
  • Thinner, lighter, and available on all cellular providers. Maybe not T-Mobile.
  • 5MP camera on the back.
  • More ram and a better processor.
  • Apple assistant.
  • Available next week.

In terms of the Apple iPhone 5:

  • Larger screen.
  • Aluminum redesign.
  • Assistant baked in.
  • 8MP camera.
  • Apple A5 processor.
  • Much thinner than we expected.
  • Available end of the month.
  • Sprint partnering.
  • 4G

So there you have it — nothing massive in terms of prediction but I’m sure these are on lock. Tomorrow we will all check it out. I’ll be tweeting live of course. Not that the entire world won’t be. Look for tweet records to be broken haha! Should be fun to see what goes down! I’ll be watching TWiT.

Say Hello to the iPhone 5… Sort Of

Case-Mate, the popular Apple accessory company accidentally leaked case designs on their official website earlier today. The case was for the unannounced and upcoming iPhone 5. Case-Mate quickly pulled the images but the damage had already been done — I saved a copy of the image, haha! Me and the rest of the Internet of course.

From the look of things the phone is obviously much, much thinner. To me it resembles a small iPad 2 which is nice. I like the lines and I love the fact that the promo images show the phone with a metallic/aluminum back plate. That means no more glass, no more scratches!

One can only hope the fact these images are rendered means the phone launch is coming soon. With iOS 5 right around the corner I wouldn’t be surprised to hear the official announcement any day now. The Apple event is looming.

Steve Jobs Steps Down — Tim Cook Immediately Named CEO

What I consider the greatest creative mind of the last 100 years finally stepped down today from his position at Apple. Steve Jobs embodies everything that makes him the world’s greatest CEO to ever run a company. A true visionary and the reason I became a product manager.

In a letter to the media Jobs writes:

To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple”s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple”s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Steve

Heartbreaking because you just know it is health related. I wish Steve Jobs nothing but the best and hope for a speedy recovery. Beyond the product and love for Apple his vision on charity (refusing to give) and his excellence in leadership makes him a hero on so many levels.

I hope that this drastic news is not because he is at death’s door.

Update: In a move similar to swearing-in the Vice President after a President can no longer serve the country Tim Cook has been named Apple CEO. Steve remains Chairman of the Board.

Two Days With The MacBook Air: My Thoughts

I’ve had my new Air for about 2, maybe 3 days. Nothing has changed in terms of love for the machine. I stand by my statement that this is the best laptop money can buy (unless you are looking for a desktop replacement machine to do heavy video or graphic editing). The machine is light, fast, and perfect. The battery is unreal! 9 hours is a wonderful thing!

Some questions I’ve had have come from family and friends so I figured I would throw a small list together to discuss them in one place. If you have a question hit me up in the ask box or shortmail me (in less than 500 characters) here.

Question 1: Do you miss the DVD drive?

Not at all. On my 2010 13″ Pro (which is now the world’s most expensive paperweight) I used the optical drive over the span of 9 months about three times. My portable media of choice is my 8GB thumb drive.

Question 2: How is the battery life?

As I said above, it is unreal. One charge gets me through about 8 hours of use. I have no complaints.

Question 3: How is the storage?

I have no complaints again, I got the top end Air 1.8GHz i7 with a 256GB solid state drive. 256GB is more than enough storage for a mobile computer. Not to mention I have 8GB of truly mobile storage in my jump drive, and let’s not forget that I have 5GB of free storage in the cloud with iCloud! No need for a giant drive. Of course I have a 1TB Western Digital that collects dust.

Question 4: Why did you even get an Air?

To be completely honest it was the screen resolution that was lacking on the 13″ Pro. The Air has a nicer resolution and I take advantage of every pixel.

Question 5: Can you play games or Photoshop on that thing?

To be honest I haven’t tried but considering I used to play Left 4 Dead 2 on my Pro which is less powerful than my new Air I’d say I will be alright if I decide to load up Steam. I will make sure to test it this weekend and let you know!

So there you have it, the most popular questions I get — I know I’m late on my review but I always like to take my time. I stand by what I say; if you are in line for a new machine don’t waste time with anything else. At the very least go to the Apple store and play with one.

The thing is so mobile and light I throw it in a bag everywhere I go.
