LulzSec Hacks the CIA, We Get Regulated

LulzSec, the now infamous group of hackers took their game to a new level today when they launched an attack on the United State’s Central Intelligence Agency. IBT reports:

On Wednesday the public website of the CIA went down, with the hacker group Lulz Security saying it had launched the attack.

The group has recently launched other high profile attacks on multinational corporation Sony and News Corp, and even Senate websites, among others.

While there are a million opinions on this all over the internet I just want to comment on what I fear this will bring down the road. One word: regulation. The immediate effect of the hacks and cracks is the flash of a big game hack. However the lasting effects will be new bills introduced on the hill that will only hurt everyday people. Sooner or later the US Government will attempt to “control” the internet in ways that will make it impossible for everyday people to enjoy it.

These hacks are the catalyst. While I think the message these groups like LulzSec and Anon are trying to send can be positive they must understand that their actions carry grave repercussions for the rest of us. The issues they are rising to fight against are actually the issues they may in fact be bringing to light on a grand scale.

When we need licenses to log “online” and we need to apply for permission to get on the Internet you can refer to this post. How long will it be before the Internet becomes too much like the wild west for our corrupt government? Sooner or later governments seek to control and dominate these infrastructures. The more you poke the bear the quicker it rises to bite.

Let’s hope these hackers know what they are doing. Don’t fear them (at least initially) but fear those who regulate you.
