Last Night I Witnessed a Miracle; Thank You Capitalism!

Last night I witnessed a miracle. I was sitting on my couch and a little electronic rectangular device laying next to me began to make noise and shake. What was this sorcery? It was my cell phone. An object used to transmit data and information from one area to another through invisible radio waves.

What was being transmitted? Well, millions of bits of information was sent from London England by my good friend Bill. He too has one of these magical devices. He wrote me a message by tapping on a screen with his fingers. After composing the message he had it zapped to my phone. It traveled thousands of miles in an instant. Much faster than he could ever walk, run, or fly the message to me. It said:

“Alright bruv, I got my new iPhone 4S now so I’m presuming this text is free :) , what have you been up to son?”

Imagine that, I was now conversing across the globe with a friend I have never even shared a room with! All of this made possible by capitalistic pursuit and market demand. Could you imagine what would happen if the government and state controlled all means of production — you know, a Socialist society? Do you really think without profit based incentive there would be a product half, or half of a half as good as this magical iPhone?

And forgetting that — we were talking for “free” (I recognize subscriber fees and the cost of electric to charge the phone but for argument’s sake it was free). That’s right, no need for SMS charges. The grand wizard named Steve Jobs has bestowed upon us a magical machine that made communication possible.

People all across the planet communicate like this everyday, with all different types of miracle boxes called cellular phones. All because of capitalism makes it possible. All because of a market demand by consumers and entrepreneurs’ ability to meet said demand for a profit. These are modern-day miracles. Not only that — because of capitalism, everyday this magic is cheaper and cheaper to own! Not because government gets involved but because entrepreneurs find cheaper means of production while increasing performance and availability. Need proof — look at the price of data storage over the years.

Lesson: if you feel capitalism is a problem then you are mistaken. Your gripe is with government and big business manipulating you. This is called Corporatism and it is dangerous to mix the two.

Capitalism drives innovation and without it we would all be standing in line for our government food rations like they did in Soviet Russia. We would not be sitting on our couches talking with friends across a vast ocean named the Atlantic, on a device not much bigger than a deck of playing cards.

Thank you Capitalism!

iOS 5.1 Beta 2 Brings Delete to Photo Stream

Great news for everyone who has ever taken naked or revealing photos with their iPhone. iOS 5.1 beta 2 will now allow you to delete photos from your Photo Stream. Not exactly sure how this product shipped without something as basic as a delete function but alas it will be repaired soon enough.

Secret Internet Fatties everywhere breathe a sigh of relief. All those odd angle nudes will now be wiped away. A clean slate to start fresh, haha!

What’s Happening to Twitter?

Twitter released their latest mobile application and as expected it has met the fury of the user base. Twitter has strayed away from simple “microblogging” to become a full featured ad delivery tool. That’s right, Twitter has finally moved from the simple 140 character status share to a social network tailored to the demands of the marketing gods.

Twitter for iPhone is no longer an interaction tool to create, it has become a tool to consume. Consume what? Well tweets of course, but who’s tweets? Gone is the “mentions” tab. Gone is the presence of direct messages. Now in place you have “Connect” and “Discover”. What do you connect and discover? I’m not exactly sure. Granted I haven’t really used Twitter for iPhone since Tweetie was purchased by Twitter. I have been using Tweetbot (more on that later).

So what’s the deal? Twitter seems to be pushing their product in a new direction — Twitter has made a bold move to make Twitter a place to serve information from people and companies who can afford to push said information to users. The “Discover” tab lets users follow the latest trends and news stories but who cares? It is often filled with items I simply don’t care about. It is items from people I don’t want to know or interact with. Yet it is right there, in my face.

Twitter seems to be moving in a backward direction. While they want to increase participation it is clear that the company is moving in an ad friendly direction. The app went from being Tweetie beautiful to Twitter for iPhone ugly. The app has wasted space, it isn’t efficient, and for the love of all things… what happened to direct messages? What about multiple account support? All of this buried.

It have a sneaking suspicion that Twitter is running out of steam. Sure it’s gaining ads but at what cost? Twitter has always lacked organization and a firm base. The 140 character and @reply system has worked but there was never any structure. No form like Facebook — it is so easy to follow interaction on Facebook. Twitter is going toward a “discovery” focus which is code for ad focus while Facebook is aiming to create a world where people can share ideas, likes, dislikes, and photos.

So all of this rambling, now what? I love Twitter, it has always been my favorite but their seemingly hell bent on serving the advertisers over the users. Remember the #dickbar? Well the new app is more or less just the #DickApp. It sucks. It’s ugly and lacks true function. The redesign leads me to believe I understand why visionary Tweetie creator Loren B left the company recently. If I saw my product get executed I would leave too.

Facebook steams ahead. Never thought I would say that!

Say Hello to the iPhone 5… Sort Of

Case-Mate, the popular Apple accessory company accidentally leaked case designs on their official website earlier today. The case was for the unannounced and upcoming iPhone 5. Case-Mate quickly pulled the images but the damage had already been done — I saved a copy of the image, haha! Me and the rest of the Internet of course.

From the look of things the phone is obviously much, much thinner. To me it resembles a small iPad 2 which is nice. I like the lines and I love the fact that the promo images show the phone with a metallic/aluminum back plate. That means no more glass, no more scratches!

One can only hope the fact these images are rendered means the phone launch is coming soon. With iOS 5 right around the corner I wouldn’t be surprised to hear the official announcement any day now. The Apple event is looming.

iPhone 5 Render Leaked?

Probably not but MacRumors had some interesting insight. My question is if this is really a leaked render how much longer can Apple keep baiting their fan base with recycled versions of the same product? Re: iPad and iPad2. One would argue that the iPad2 should have been the iPad. It’s all good for Apple though, then really know how to play the fans…

Sorry but two cameras and a faster processor is not revolutionary, nor is it a reason to hold a press conference. Guess where I won’t be today – that’s right, in line for an iPad2.

Same goes here, bigger screen and a faster processor for the iPhone 5? I hope not.

Why I Can’t Wait For the Verizon iPhone

For so long every tech pundit has been watering and foaming at the mouth for the Verizon iPhone. All the complaints about AT&T being a crappy network reached even the most unsophisticated of technology users. So now as we approach the Verizon presser on the 11th what is the call? Should we all be ready to move to Verizon and abandon AT&T? No, not at all.

As a loyal AT&T user I for one hope that all of these people with problems do take off to big red. It will free up tons of room and resources for people who want to be apart of the network. I can’t imagine the network won’t see a huge performance spike the week of the jump. As bad as it will be for business initially AT&T will recoup. How? Simple. As the network performance increases it will attract new customers. Room in the infrastructure means more clients to replace the people who jumped to Verizon.

I love how there Verizon jumpers are so excited to go out and buy a new iPhone 4, again. Sure they will be getting the V network but what is the guarantee that AT&T will receive the next big iPhone? Verizon is getting the 4 in January – what happens in June when the iPhone 5 launches? Will Verizon get a piece? Probably not… if it were so then why not wait for the next iPhone launch to announce the new network?

All in all I am looking forward for the big jump. AT&T will do just fine and the network will see a nice purge that will free up resources for the other customers. All of the San Francisco crowed will jump but their problems were never AT&T because AT&T didn’t want to help. It all boils down to government granted monopolies. Without the ability to raise new towers there was no way to service the massive demand in the area. Long story short don’t hate the player, hate the state.

You like that twist there? I know I did!
