Netflix

Anyone out there in the blogging world a bit tired of Netflix? It seems like ever since the big “misunderstanding” (the birth and subsequent death of Qwikster) Netflix has really fallen by the wayside. I still pay my subscription fee but I also signed up for DirecTV in the last month and I can say that Netflix has been the victim of the snooze button.

I think Netflix needs to up the content game. They are doing little at a public level to corner the market. If I were Netflix I would be buying up every contract for content I could. I’m sure they are working on it but to me the hype has died and the chance may have passed.

One saving grace… will they intro gaming?

Email Is Really Dead

In case you don’t follow the tech world, highly respected journalist and personal favorite MG Siegler recently gave up email for good. The way he sees it, it’s just archaic and nothing short of “the devil”. I happen to agree. Email is more or less obsolete. It was a fabulous tool of the early Internet revolution but its day has come and gone.

Inboxes are riddled with spam, unwanted email from people you don’t even want to deal with, and notifications from other networks you participate on. It’s long, inefficient, and lacks any sort of social aspect. Email is seen as a job, not something anyone wants to participate in. Email is more of a job than something that can be enjoyed. The simplicity of Twitter, the social aspect of Facebook, and numerous other networks have changed communication. This could not be more evident in my latest experience.

In the past if and when you wanted to talk to someone on the Internet you had two main choices, email or IM. Now let’s say I wanted to ask Mr. Siegler a question about something related to tech my option was to email him and hope that in his 20GB’s of email he stumbles on my email. I also have to hope he isn’t so annoyed with other emails he actually answers me back. This is impossible.

Not the case with other forms of communication. Something quick, easy, and even social. Thanks to the new Tumblr inbox talking to someone like MG has never been easier. To date he has answered 2 or 3 of my questions. Things that would never have been addressed otherwise sorted out in minutes. As I think more and more about it, I can’t stand email. I just can’t keep myself interested enough to follow through. Why send a long annoying letter when a 140 character direct message can do?

There is no reason…

Truth of the matter — email is obsolete. I’m declaring email bankruptcy.

School is Flawed. Getting to the “Core” Issues.

I might be speaking for a large variety of people when I say I absolutely hate the college “core curriculum”. It begs the question, “what is high school for?” – apparently nothing!

I am more than sympathetic to people who need to touch up on basic principles of math and english but for the average student these ideas and practices are cemented in our minds from our freshman year! Why do I need to take classes that don’t count towards my major? Why am I forced to spend my money on classes that will result in myself and others simply going through the motions to get a decent grade? I answer…

These classes are a waste of time. The core curriculum is nothing more than a way for schools to exploit money from the government pipeline. The more classes required the more you are a slave to the debt system. With a degree one is simply buying their way into a potential position. Degrees are merely sorting tools for potential employers. Those who have a degree have a license to compete for a position. Those who don’t… well often times they aren’t so lucky.

Schools exploit the cash pipeline pumped by the Federal Reserve. With government intervention in education it only cements the issue. State “approved” curriculum means more classes that don’t teach a skill or a trade. More classes that get in the way of a hypothetical student named Sally. Sally is now forced to take 19th century European history when she is actually a nursing major. The time sally spends in class is time not able to be allocated towards improving her understanding in nursing.

Each forced minute in these classes represents a minute she can never invest in nursing. That makes Sally one minute less experienced than others.

On Why Twitter Has Destroyed Blogging

It’s no secret, blogging isn’t what it used to be. At least in terms of personal/novelty blogs. Sure the big names like TechCrunch, Engadget, Gizmodo, etc haven’t seen any sort of impact but small time, or personal corners of the web are being run out 140 characters at a time.

I used to blog heavily, especially during the early 2000′s I would find a way to get several articles or stories up a day. I enjoyed having a voice that I could then share with people who would then share with more people. It was nice to be able to speak to such a large audience with little effort. Now though when I have a thought or something I want to say I have a large group of friends and followers actively monitoring their Twitter feed! All need be done is grab my iPhone, Macbook Pro, or iPad and crank out something short, witty, and insightful. I press “tweet” and my thoughts are now shared with a great group of people who can then re-share it or reply and engage in a conversation with me.

What makes Twitter such a force is the fact it limits your character count. Everyone knows this but do people realize how much of an impact this has on our thought process? I believe it was my friend Luc who said something like “I hate it, if you want to talk to me, talk to me. I’m not limiting myself to one hundred and forty characters”. He had a great point. We are really trained to get our ideas across to others in such a limited amount of space. I ask though, maybe this isn’t such a bad thing?

Why is this so bad? Rather than breaking out my WordPress and sitting around typing up a very wordy, long, and unnecessary post about something I could simply hop on Twitter and say…

Twitter killed the blog. No need to make a long drawn out post when it can be condensed into 140 characters. Where is communication headed?
