Amazon Kindle Tablet Is Real

Thanks to M.G. Siegler of TechCrunch fame we now know that the Amazon Kindle Tablet is very real. He writes:

It’s called simply the “Amazon Kindle”. But it’s not like any Kindle you’ve seen before. It displays content in full color. It has a 7-inch capacitive touch screen. And it runs Android.

As I stated previously there would be no point in launching tons of tablets for the marketplace without innovating. While Amazon might not be innovating just yet they will be the first serious threat to the iPad. Most important is to remember they have the user base in place. Kindle users are a presence.

The price for this device is another key in the equation. $249.99 — way below the iPad price. This opens the market for people who are looking to get in to the tablet market but don’t have the $500 to get involved with the iPad.

I was interested in purchasing a Kindle the other day but something told me to hold out. I had heard the rumors of the Kindle Tablet and wanted to see what the next product cycle brought. This is without question a purchase for me. I read a lot and now I will have a full featured tablet to browse on.

Minutes with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2

I got to play with the original Samsung Galaxy Tab a few months ago. While I felt it was a great attempt to reach the level of the Apple iPad I felt there were too many issues with Adroid to really make it a contender. After playing with the Galaxy Tab 2 I can safely say that Samsung has developed the best alternative to the iPad that money can buy.

In short the tablet is smooth, well designed, and most of all light! It felt like I was holding a spiral notebook. Gone is the weight. The screen was vibrant and coupled with Androids animations made for a great viewing experience.

Camera is something to behold. The image quality and video quality is on the level of any of the top contenders. I thought the white balance in direct sun was a bit messy but nothing you can’t deal with. Considering it’s a tablet I don’t think it will matter.

Android in my opinion still has it’s short comings, at least to an Apple fanboy like myself. The OS just doesn’t feel smooth sometimes. Particularly in my most documented complaint — the swipe. It still feels choppy to scroll and that’s something that annoys me. The time it takes to respond to my finger leaves a micro-lag and throws me off. This does not exist on the iPad.

All that aside and this is a great machine. Something I would consider if I had the extra money to throw around. Samsung is really making great strides but in my mind the tablet on top of the mountain is still the iPad 2.
